Beowulf: Bravery, Great Deeds and Perseverance
Literature has long provided us with an insight to the different faces of bravery, great deeds, and perseverance. These gave rise to new heroes which were characterized differently and provided every poem or epic a great lesson for everyone to learn. Beowulf is one of the oldest yet one of the greatest epic that the world has ever known. The heroic myth of Beowulf depicts three major themes which are bravery, great deeds, and perseverance which are also common in other heroic myths, this paper will provide examples of the three themes as they apply to Beowulf and compare the themes to other heroic myths were the themes bravery, great deeds, and perseverance are also present.
This epic took place in the 5th century in Europe. Beowulf, the protagonist, is a hero who has saved a land from a monster, who was named Grendel, whom he killed in battle after attacking people. The hero also came in contact with the monster’s angry mother and claimed to have extinguished her too. Because of this and other circumstances, Beowulf gained rule over the land and became its king. Eventually he has led the kingdom into prosperity and economic development during his rule. However, there came a time when his kingdom was shaken with strife. He has met another battle with a dragon during the later years of his reign. Eventually, King Beowulf had faced a battle with this ferocious beast to turn the dragon away from the land and extinguish it forever. He was able to kill the dragon but in the process also hurt himself really badly and died in battle (Raffel & Creed, 1999).
Before Beowulf has been the king of Heorot, he has already been exposed to different battles where he was able to showcase his talent as a warrior.
