Why I Am 100% Anti-Essay
An essay is a short literary composition pertaining to a certain subject or theme. They express the writer's personal opinions while explaining and discussing a subject. Writing an essay has been known to be difficult and drain a student of her or his will to live. Essays, in fact, are one of the most horrific parts of the high school experience.
Throughout their lives, students have been assigned a variety of essays by teachers. Even teachers who teach non-English related subject matter are participating in the essay epidemic. I speak for many students when I say that I'm fed up with it. First of all, I don't think anybody enjoys writing an essay. Everytime one gets assigned, I hear countless groans and pleas to God throughout the class. It's evident that not only do students not like essays, but they dread them. Personally, I think students hate essays because we are well over-acquainted with them. I know I have had to write essays every year since I was introduced to them in 4th grade. It's getting old!!
One thing that particularly upsets me about essays is that year after year the essay assignments not only seem to be assigned more often, but teachers are requiring them to be longer and longer! For example, in my English class last year we were instructed to turn in one essay a week, all containing at least 5 paragraphs with at minimum 6 sentences each. This year's English class requires us to have essays with 5 paragraphs each containing 9 sentences! Where does the madness end? Am I going to be typing up 15 sentenced paragraphs in my papers by my senior year? Quantity is not necessarily quality! I don't understand why teaches seem to believe that the longer an essay is the better it is. If I were to read essays that went on and on, I'd have a fit of murderous rage within no time.
